Is House Paint dangerous for my health?

It is generally safe to use house paint, as long as you follow the proper precautions.

However, some people may be more sensitive to the fumes and chemicals in paint, and inhaling these fumes can cause short-term health effects such as dizziness, headaches, and nausea.

To minimise the risk of health effects, it is important to use paint in a well-ventilated area and to follow the safety instructions on the label. You should also wear protective gear, such as a mask and gloves, to prevent skin and respiratory irritation.

If you are pregnant or have pre-existing health conditions, you may want to consider hiring a professional to do the painting or using low- or no-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints, which are less toxic.

It is also a good idea to open windows and doors to allow for proper ventilation when using any type of paint.

What is the correct order to paint a room?

The correct order to paint a room is:

  1. Prepare the room: Remove all furniture, fixtures, and decorations from the room. Cover the floor with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect it from spills and splatters. Repair any holes or imperfections in the walls.
  2. Protect non-paint surfaces: Use painter's tape to protect trim, molding, windows, and any other surfaces that you do not want to paint.
  3. Prime the walls: If the walls have never been painted before or if you are changing the paint color significantly, it is a good idea to prime the walls first. This will help the paint adhere better and provide a more even finish.
  4. Paint the trim: Start by painting the trim, including the skirting boards, door frames, and window frames. Use a paint brush or paint roller with a narrow tip to get a clean, precise line.
  5. Paint the walls: Once the trim is dry, paint the walls. Use a paint roller with a medium-sized nap for most surfaces. For textured walls or walls with imperfections, use a roller with a thicker nap to help cover the texture.
  6. Touch up and clean up: Once the paint is dry, remove the painter's tape and touch up any areas where the paint may have bled or dripped. Clean up any spills or splatters, and dispose of the drop cloths or plastic sheeting.

It is important to follow this order to ensure that you get a professional-looking finish and that all surfaces are properly protected and prepared before painting.

Can painting my house improve its value?

Generally, house painting is considered a maintenance expense rather than a capital improvement. A capital improvement is a major addition or alteration to a property that increases its value or useful life. Examples of capital improvements might include adding a new room to a house, installing a new roof or siding, or upgrading major systems such as plumbing or electrical.

However, house painting is generally considered a routine maintenance expense that is necessary to keep the property in good condition. It is not typically considered a major addition or alteration to the property and does not usually increase its value or useful life in the same way as a capital improvement.

However, it's worth noting that the tax treatment of house painting and other home improvement expenses can vary depending on the specific circumstances and the laws in your area. It's always a good idea to consult with a tax professional or review the relevant tax laws to understand how these expenses may be treated in your specific situation.

Do you cut in first when painting?

Cutting in is a technique used when painting where you paint the edges or corners of a surface, typically where the wall meets the ceiling or where the wall meets a molding or trim. It is usually done before painting the larger, flat surfaces of the wall.

To cut in, you will need a paint brush with a fine tip. Dip the brush into the paint and tap off any excess. Then, starting at the corner or edge, gently apply the paint in a straight line along the edge or corner. You can use a steady, continuous motion or a series of short strokes to apply the paint.

It is important to be precise when cutting in, as this will help create a clean, professional-looking finish. You may need to touch up any areas that you missed or that are not straight with a second coat.

Cutting in can take some practice, so don't worry if you don't get it right the first time. Just take your time and be patient, and you will improve with experience.

Painting professionals usually follow a certain order when painting a room.

We paint the trim first, then the ceiling, then the walls.

That's because it's easier (and faster) to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls.

Do I really need to use Primer?

Primer is a type of paint that is applied before the main coat of paint. It is used to prepare the surface for painting and to improve the adhesion and durability of the paint. Whether or not you need to use a primer depends on the condition of the surface you are painting and the type of paint you are using.

Here are a few situations where you might consider using a primer:

  • If you are painting over a previously painted surface that is in poor condition, such as a surface with peeling or chipped paint, a primer can help to create a smooth and even surface for the new paint to adhere to.
  • If you are painting over a porous surface, such as wood or plaster, a primer can help to seal the surface and prevent the paint from soaking in too quickly. This can help to improve the coverage and durability of the paint.
  • If you are painting over a surface that has been previously painted with a different type of paint, a primer can help to create a uniform surface for the new paint to adhere to. For example, if you are painting over oil-based paint with water-based paint, you may need to use a primer to ensure that the paint adheres properly.
  • If you are painting a surface that is prone to staining, such as a kitchen or bathroom, a primer can help to prevent the paint from becoming discoloured over time.

Overall, it's a good idea to use a primer whenever you are painting a surface that has never been painted before, or if the surface is in poor condition. It can help to ensure that the paint adheres properly and lasts for a long time.

Is it OK to cut in one day and paint the next?

It really shouldn't matter.

In the end, it's the exact same paint so it should match.

In our experience, it's easier to lay down a thicker coat of paint with a roller than brush, so after doing one coat of cutting in, and then one coat of rolling, you may notice the edges look lighter because there is less paint there.

When is the best time of year to paint my house?

The best time of year to paint a house will depend on the climate and weather conditions in your region.

In general, the best time to paint is when the weather is dry and temperatures are moderate. This typically means avoiding the hottest and coldest times of the year.

In areas with hot summers, it is best to paint in the spring or autumn when temperatures are cooler. Late spring or early autumn is often considered the best time to paint because the air is drier, which can help the paint dry more quickly and evenly.

If you live in an area which experiences cold winters, it is best to paint during the summer when temperatures are warmer. However, it is important to avoid painting in direct sunlight or when the temperature is too hot, as this can cause the paint to dry too quickly and lead to poor adhesion.

Overall, it is important to choose a time when the weather is relatively dry, temperatures are moderate, and there is no threat of rain or other precipitation.

This will help ensure that the paint has a chance to dry properly and adhere to the surface of the house.

What is the process of Plastering?

Plastering is the process of covering uneven surfaces or rough walls in the construction of houses and other structures with a plastic material, called plaster, which is a mixture of lime or cement concrete and sand along with the required quantity of water.

Is it easy to plaster a wall yourself?

Yes, you can tackle a plastering job yourself. You will need some learning, careful work and some time to learn the process.

It's like anything, you just need to put the effort in to learn how.

What is the difference between skimming and plastering?

Skimming is the term given to a plastering technique where a wall is plastered with a layer of thin coat. ... They are both used to decorate buildings and increase the durability of a wall, but skimming is generally used to upgrade an old building whereas plastering is done to a new one.

Is Gyprock the same as plasterboard?

Gyprock is also known as gypsum board, drywall, or plasterboard. Plaster made from lime, sand, animal hair and other ingredients has been used to create a smooth interior finishes on building walls and ceilings for thousands of years.

Gyprock, made by CSR, is the leading brand of plasterboard in Australia. It is used for sheeting walls, ceilings and cornices.

MORE ABOUT US

Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Exactly how much paint should I buy?

We suggest around 3.5 litres for every 32 square metres (slightly smaller than the size of the average family room), but you’ll need almost double that if you’re applying two coats  ––  for example, if you’re painting over a dark colour and don’t use primer. You’ll also likely need an extra coat of paint for textured surfaces, such as brick. Another reason to get more than you think you’ll need: The exact colour of paint can vary if it’s mixed at different times, so the shade you buy this weekend might be slightly different from the same shade you buy next week when you realize you’re short.

  • Should I throw out a paint roller or try to clean it?

Most roller covers are cheap enough that you can treat them as disposables. But if you’d like to limit waste, you can clean them with a hand-powered brush-and-roller spinner.(about $15 hardware stores or paint supply shops). Slide the paint-soaked cover onto the spinner’s rotating head, and pump the handle; centrifugal force whirls off clingy paint. Rinse the roller in soapy water, then repeat a few times. To avoid splatters, do the spinning in a 15 litre bucket. Stand the roller up vertically to dry.

  • What are the different kinds of paint finishes and how do I select them for each room?

Paint finish comes in three general categories:

Flat Finish– also known as matte finish

Satin Finish – also known as eggshell finish or low-luster finish

Gloss Finish – also known as semi-gloss finish .

The best places to use flat paint are ceilings, low traffic areas, and rooms that don’t require extensive cleaning.

If it's a well-saturated look you are after that has rich results, you’ll want to go with a flat finish. Flat paint is the most forgiving finish with the best colour payout.

If you need to cover imperfections, patching or joints, flat paint can absorb light, making your dings and flaws less noticeable. The draw back to a flat finish is the lack of durability. Flat paint needs to be cleaned carefully as scrubbing may remove some of the paint. This can cause an uneven or patchy look on the wall.

Satin finish is one of the best finishes to use that allow you to compromise between durability and colour esthetics. Satin has a subtle sheen that gives your room a great colouring while faint enough still to hide imperfections. Satin has one other feature that makes it a favorite for homeowners. Its strength allows it to dry just a bit harder than other paints, which helps the paint protect itself from environments that have more moisture in the air. Satin finish is also resistant to mildew, stains and dirt, and can be cleaned quickly.

Satin paint is best for living areas, kitchen, entryway, bathrooms and high traffic areas.

Semi-Gloss is best for kitchens and bathrooms. It has a higher sheen, typically 40-70% more than other paint finishes. Semi-gloss finish is known to reflect light and have a beautiful glow, without being too shiny. The most durable of the finishes, semi-gloss holds up well in humid environments and is extremely easy to clean.

There’s a basic rule when it comes to paint finishes; the greater the shine, the more durable the paint will be.

However, the higher the gloss, the more imperfections will show on your walls.

  • I want to have a professional paint my house. How do I find a good house painter and what information should I require in the quote?

They are both excellent questions and more people should ask them.

To find a good painting contractor, start by asking friends and neighbours for recommendations. Word of mouth is a very powerful tool. You could see if your local paint shop has a list. You could search the internet (that's how you found us).

Once you’re ready to talk to them, ask for and check references or other jobs they have done. When they give you a quote, get a firm price. Ask for both a start and finish date. Ask who will actually do the work and check to see if the contractor has public liability insurance.

    And never pay in advance.

A contract also should include a list of the work that is to be done, how many coats for each surface, the type of paint to be used for each part of the job, the preparation work that will be done, and who supplies the paint and other materials.

  • Can I paint straight onto plasterboard?

Painting or wallpapering over a plasterboard wall is pretty straightforward. Ensure all the joints and nail holes are filled correctly so they don't show through the paintwork or wall covering. It's important also to seal the surface correctly to ensure a good bond.

  • Do you need to tape plasterboard joints?

Whenever two pieces of plasterboard have been joined you should use Scrim tape  along the joint. After he scrim tape is applied the area should be plastered over using skimming plaster. To prevent cracking, Internal corners also require taping and ensure the scrim covers both sides of the joint equally.

Why should you Hire a Professional Painter?

Are you planning to change the look of your living or working space?

Then nothing gives you an instant transformation more than painting it.

There are numerous factors which influence the look and feel of your space and painting is the most important of all. Have you noticed that when someone, a guest or a visitor, walks into space, the first thing they notice is the walls. If the space is  nicely painted it gives a captivating look and if it isn’t then very little you do to your interior will make it appealing. So, when you decide to paint your house or office, you have the choice:

  • Do it yourself
  • Get a mate to do it
  • Find a painter on Gumtree (oh no!)
  • Hire a professional

Let's forget the first two!

Hiring a painter from a handyman website who quotes a very low price, can be very tempting. Giving the painting project to a low cost painter can save you a bit of money but there is no guarantee that you’ll be satisfied with the result. There's a good chance that you will end up with a sloppy paint job and you'll need to spend more to fix their mistakes.

Painting is much more than holding a paintbrush and roller.

Benefits of Professional Painters

Let’s look at the option of hiring professional painters to paint your home or office.

Anyone can paint but, not everyone is a professional painter.

A professional painter will give your home or office that look you were expecting, and beyond. Sure, hiring professional painters can cost you a bit extra than  'your mate' but is definitely worth it.

Here are some reasons, why you should hire professional painters

  • No Worries: You won’t have to worry or take responsibility for the result if you hire professional painters. Professional painters know how to paint and prepare a space. Instead of stressing about the painting job, you can spend your time doing something that you actually want to do.
  • Detailed Information: Professional painters will discuss with you all the necessary details of the painting process. They will help you to pick the right colours, whether for your interior and exterior. They will also keep you updated on the progress throughout the complete painting process.
  • Product Knowledge: This is the big one! Professional painters know a lot more about the right painting products to use. They always use genuine, branded products. They know which product should be used in a specific area; like the kitchen, bathroom, living area, etc. If there is any problem on the surface of the wall, they know what product to use.
  • Quality Finish Every Time: Quality finish, this is a big difference and what professional painters are known for. They know how to get that top quality finish. They guarantee a smooth and shining finish to all surfaces, and that's what sets them apart from amateurs. Professional painters will take care of your painting project and will give you a quality finish which will last for years.
  • On-Time Job: Professional Painters will efficiently handle the paint job. They manage their time effectively and will complete the job on time and to a finish you will be happy with.
  • Worth of money: When you look to invest in anything, you always seek a Return On Investment. Same thing when you spend money on hiring professional painters, it is an investment you make on your home or office. But with a professional you increase the chance of a  result that you will be happy with.
  • Experience: Being professional in any field is not the result of a few weeks or months. Professional painters have years of experience and when they work on any project, they apply that experience to the job at hand. They know how to prepare the surface, how many coats of paint will be required, and what action needs to be taken to deliver your quality finish.
  • Well Equipped: These days professional painting services require many modern tools and equipment. Some jobs might require a vacuum sanding machine, spray machine, or some other costly machine. Professional painters will have all the required tools or equipment for all types of projects.
  • Clean-Up: Painting projects can go for a few days or sometimes for weeks. They start the job by covering up all the unmovable objects. Professional painters know their job and at the end of every day will ensure they clean up after themselves.

There are many reasons and benefits to hiring a professional in any field, particularly painting. We hope helps you to understand why you should hire a professional painter for your next project. If you don’t want to compromise quality look no further than Painters Newcastle, your local painter and decorator in Newcastle.
